Youth Offending Team
The Youth Offending Team, YOT, is a multi-agency team which include Social Workers, Youth Workers, Police Officers and Probation Officers as well as specialist Health and Education staff. We work with young people in trouble with the law, we provide support and programmes of work to prevent re-offending or as ‘Diversion’ from prosecution and we run and support most of the Orders of the Court. A more recent addition aimed at offering support to young people and their families to prevent them entering the Diversion or Court systems, this is called the Youth Intervention Support Programme. (YISP)
Exeter, East and Mid-Devon Youth Offending Team have been working with the Market Centre since its inception in 2000. Alongside The North Devon and The South Devon YOTs we make up the Devon Youth Offending Service and together we are one of the 158 YOTs in England and Wales. The YOTs are guided by the Youth Justice Board and the YJB comes under the Ministry of Justice.
Restorative Justice is about making good the harm that has been caused by offending behaviour and is a really important part of what we do. Our RJ Team offer mediation between the victims of crime and their offenders, this usually has a positive outcome for both parties.
We help the staff at the Drop-in Centre support young people in trouble both at the Centre and in the Courts and Police Stations by providing advice and guidance.
The YOT has other links to the Drop-in Centre, besides booking rooms to see our clients in. There has always been a YOT Officer on the board of Trustees and at the heart of the Market Centre.
If you have questions or are worried about what to do if you are arrested for offending, reported for Anti-Social Behaviour or about going to Court then please talk to Market Centre Staff or look at the Youth Justice Board’s website www.yjb.gov.uk This is a really important information resource and the Market Centre staff will be happy to help you find your way around it or they may ask us to help you.
Finally, if ever you are arrested legal advice is free to young people while they are in police stations so always ask to see a solicitor, it is one of your rights.
