Devon Crimebeat
Devon Crimebeat has
two main aims, to empower young people, with appropriate support to
foster community safety and to encourage young people to become
responsible members of their communities. Devon Crimebeat was launched in March 2000 by the then High Sheriff of Devon and this has followed on with successive High Sheriffs.
These two aims are achieved through the provision of small grants, of up to £500 for each scheme. If a group of young people between the ages of 8 and 25 years old have an idea of how to improve life in their community, reduce crime, the fear of crime or the opportunity for crime they can apply to Devon Crimebeat to turn their idea into reality.
Devon Crimebeat has a management committee and a working group which are detailed on the enclosed structure sheet. The working group is responsible for considering the applications for funding and deciding which groups will receive grants through Devon Crimebeat.
The types of schemes which Crimebeat in other parts of the country have become involved in are very diverse and have covered a large number of crime related and community safety issues. Also enclosed is a summary of Devon Crimebeat schemes that have been funded to date in the county.
The Devon and Cornwall Constabulary has been fully supportive of the initiative and the Chief Constable, has committed a police staff member to the post of Co-Ordinator to continue running the Crimebeat initiative on behalf of the High Sheriff. The funding for the Co-Ordinator is the only funding which Devon Crimebeat has been provided with by the Devon & Cornwall Constabulary and any other funding is the responsibility of the Co-Ordinator and High Sheriff.
Devon Crimebeat is being marketed to every primary and secondary school in Devon by the Police Youth Interventions Officers and the Co-Ordinator also liaises with a number of voluntary organisations who have all shown a great interest in becoming involved in this initiative.
The Crimebeat year finishes with local awards to acknowledge the work of the young people of Devon with one scheme being nominated by the High Sheriff to represent Devon at the National Crimebeat Awards held every year in London. One such scheme from Holsworthy won the National Award in 2001 for their project involving discrimination. This team also went on to win the prestigious ‘Philip Lawrence Award’ in London for their work as well as the Princes Diana Memorial Award.
