Churches Housing Action Team Who are we? Churches Housing Action Team (CHAT) has been working to prevent homelessness in Mid Devon since 1995. CHAT has skilled and sympathetic advisors who give free, confidential advice and support, tailor-made for each client. Although started by Christians and supported by Mid Devon churches you don’t have to go to church to be helped by us or to work or volunteer for us. CHAT runs a Hub for Housing Help at Coggan’s Well House (the old Job Centre), in Phoenix Lane, behind the bus station. We can give long- and short-term support: If you needhousing advice, contact us by email the firstname.lastname@example.org or phone 01884 255606. Demand for our services is very high so sometimes we can’t help you immediately, but we will assess your housing needs and contact you as soon as we can - we do this so those in the most urgent situations get help as soon as possible. We will talk with you about your current situation and discuss your possible options. We can help you in dealings with courts, the local authority and benefits and other agencies. We can also give assistance in finding suitable accommodation. CHAT runs a Deposit Guarantee scheme to help clients who can’t pay their own deposit.
If you are worried you could lose your home, you can contact us by email or phone. CHAT recognises that running a home can quite often be difficult and stressful – eg setting up home for the first time, living on a low income, being unemployed, going through a difficult time with your partner or family, suffering poor mental or physical health, or having issues with drugs or alcohol – all these could affect your tenancy. CHAT advisors can work with you to make sure you either keep your current home or that you can move on to a more suitable one. CHAT can also help with food parcels or fuel costs (key system only) – speak to a staff member at The Market Centre and they can give you a voucher if you need it. GPs and Local Welfare (at the Council buildings, Phoenix House, can also give vouchers. For further information please see our website http://www.chatmid.org/
