Churches Housing Action Team
Churches Housing Action Team (CHAT) was founded by Christians who were concerned by the large number of people experiencing housing difficulty in Mid Devon. We believe that everybody is entitled to decent, secure and affordable housing – somewhere to call home.
CHAT offers the following free of charge:-
HOUSING ADVICE Drop-in in Tiverton, Crediton and Cullompton
We give free, impartial and confidential advice about your current situation and discuss your possible options. We can assist clients in their dealings with courts, local authority, benefits and other agencies. We can also give assistance in finding suitable accommodation. CHAT runs a Deposit Guarantee scheme to help clients who cannot pay their own deposit.
MEDIATION
Young people can become homeless as a result of family pressures and many do so before the age of 19 years. Often these problems are due to everyday family circumstances. It’s sometimes hard to sort out family disputes. With our help you may avoid becoming homeless or being in the position of asking a loved one to leave home.
YOUTH PROJECT
CHAT runs a youth project in Tiverton, comprising five houses dedicated for young people - two young people in each house. One of these is a mother and baby house. The project provides supported accommodation for vulnerable young people aged 16 - 21yrs. Experienced staff provide support and supervision to each tenant.
TENANCY SUPPORT SERVICE
CHAT recognises that running your own home can quite often be difficult and stressful, for example if you are: setting up home for the first time, living on a low income, unemployed, going through a difficult time with your partner or family, suffering poor mental or physical health, or have issues with drugs or alcohol. The Tenancy Support Team can work with you to make sure you either keep your current home or that you can establish a new one.
